Day 5

This morning started awful early (waking up at 555 am) and Mike, the pharmacist took me out to breakfast at Breeze in (like an SA gas station) and then set out for his 22 foot long boat in a marina. His friend David also met us there. Originally Mike wanted to go out to lady katherine shipwreck but instead since david was coming along he decided on going to north douglas to go fishing. Boy the trek to north douglas in the boat was wicked. There were whitecaps and there was a slight rain. We got there, and tried to fish a little bit but the wind was not cooperating. So then we went to the western edge of spoon island. (i guess yesterday their friend caught a king salmon in north douglas which is why we originally went there). not even 15 minutes into casting the lines out by western spoon island (okay apparently spoon is spelt spauhn or someting but its pronounced spoon) there was a big bite on one of the reels so David was maning the reel and mike brought in all the other reels. after a good few minute battle, David had caught himself a big halibut fish. Using the net mike brought it in then you have to club the thing to kill it cause theyre soooo big and floppy! we measured it and it weighs 22.7 pounds. Apparently the halibut can get up to 200 pounds but those are the females and catching those ones may hurt the proliferation of them. halibut are flat and have one side that is olive in color and the other that is white. the white side has all the meat and the olive side faces the top of the water. Once you kill the halibut you have to flop it with the white side up because the olive side is more concentrated with blood and you want that to pool down away from the meat (do i actually sound like i know what i'm talking about?!?) so on the deck of the boat laid this 25 halibut just hanging out as the boys continued to fish. Mike had taken a syringe fromt he pharmacy and he'll puff air into a herring and throw it out to the water so the bald eagles swoop down and catch it! its pretty awesome he did this a couple times and i took video of the eagle! We continued to meander back and forth trying to catch the king salmon cause apparently they have bright silver scales which get all over the boat once you catch one.... so i was super excited.. but after 2 more hours of being out on the boat we only caught a pacific cod and some other nasty looking fish both of wh

ich we returned to the water. I ended up taking a little bit of a nap during this time cause i was tiiiiiired. It was pretty cold too. i had on a pair of running crops under my jeans, and then my northface apex coat. i soon added a "the hanger" hooded sweatshirt andy the bartender gave me the night before. We then were headed back to mikes shrimp pod (okay so its like a little circle thing that you catch shrimp in and it looks like the baskets they catch king crab in on deadliest catch but this is smaller.. and apparently there are octopus that like snacking on the shrimp too..... scary) so as we were headed to his pod spot, we saw a whale watching boat do a manuever and hang otu for a little bit... so we took our tiny 22 foot boat over to see what it was.... A POD OF 5 KILLER WHALES!!! it was soooooooo cool. they swam over to near our boat and there were two baby whales and a biiiiiig daddy whale :-) I also got video of these guys swimming past us. ahhh it was awesome. mike said that he hasnt seen killer whales in awhile so he was glad that he saw them. After the killer whales we headed back to the dock where the tide was now high (it was low at seven when we got there) there was like a 14 foot difference in the tide. The first pic is of low tide... notice how high up the bars go versus high tide as we were leaving! CRAZINESS! then mike dropped me off back at my bartlett hosue appartment where i made leftover spaghetti again. Then the smoke detector was making its screech noise when the batteries need to be exchagned so the maintenance guy came over. he was super tall and could like screw off the smoke detectors while standing flat footed on the ground. His name is brian. i asked him if he could dunk then we started talking abotu juneau stuff. He offered me a ride into downtown later so i dont have to run in the rain... OH YEA! its raining today and there is no sun that i can see. its kinda sad and depressing. But i told brian i would be okay for now we'll see what later brings and i also told him im sure i would see him out downtown tonight. So now i just get to wait until bartender andy comes around 10 pm to pick me up to bring me out to the bonfire. I am probabbly goign to take a nap i'm exhausted and might have to do a jumping workout instead of a runnign workout cause its raining pretty hard here. Hope all is well!!

After my nap, Brian the maintenance guy called and woke me up offering me a ride into downtown juneau (and since it was raining i definately said yes after my workout) Went tot he hanger where andy was just getting off work. grabbed a halibut burger then andy got ready to go out. It is very hilly in juneau like i'm still flabbergasted at how steep the streets are for a place that gets snow! We then went to the bergmann. a little hole in the wall bar. There were alot of alaskans at this bar. pretty cool atmosphere. the bartender even gave us a sample of this canadian whiskey from 1937 (they accidently broke off the tap closure or something and the cork fell in so they have to sell it for 70$ a shot) it was pretty smooth for whiskey. About midnight i was ready to cash in for the night so I got a ride back to my apartment and that was about it for the evening!
